Areas of Study
In this next section, you will learn more about the various areas that will
be covered during your training. Many techniques and principles are
common to several different styles of martial arts, while some are unique to
that style. We'll be integrating these concepts and helping you to
discover how they can best work for you.
"Although I was originally trained in an old style, hard-school
environment, I tend to be more focused on helping my students to learn the best
they can and have as much fun as possible during the process. Yes,
I will work you hard. Yes, you will sweat. You will ache the next
day. And I will definitely help you to redefine the limits of what you
thought you could accomplish. However, I'm not a drill sergeant, and I'm
looking forward to hearing your laughter somewhere during the workout.
While it is quite true that a student will never go very far in the martial
arts without lots of sweat and hard work, there is no reason for anyone to be
miserable while they are doing it.
Each student is vastly different in many ways. Strength, speed, coordination, these traits are different for everyone, that's a given. What I'm interested in is your particular motivation for pursuing the martial arts. Some of you just want a fun way to get in shape. Others are very interested in self-defense, and many are interested in both. Some folks are quite eager to compete, while many do not ever care to watch a tournament, much less be in one. And some are intrigued by the history and style of the martial arts and want to be a part of it.
Whatever your reasons for wanting to learn martial arts, and whatever your goals might be, I have made it my job to help you to achieve those goals. In addition my years of martial arts experience, I'm also a ACSM-PFIT certified personal trainer, and I use my knowledge of general fitness, nutrition, and exercise physiology to compliment your martial arts training.
On a more philosophical note, I feel that students should learn the value of discipline, personal responsibility, and restraint along with all the kicks, punches, throws, locks, chokes, slashes, and thrusts of the martial arts. In your classes, we will occasionally discuss the philosophy behind the martial arts, how you should strive to master yourself first. Although I will definitely teach you to be a stronger person who is easily able to defend yourself, I refuse to create bullies in my kwoon (school).
You have come to Jade Mountain because you have a desire to learn. I love to teach, so let's have some fun together while we walk along this path, shall we?"
